Jason Pierre- Paul is a free agent, and I don't think anyone knows what that means. Should the New York Giants sign him to a long- term contract after he played through a ? It's possible, but no one will fault them for whatever decision they make. One thing is certain, though: The Giants completely revamped their defense between 2. If they do let Pierre- Paul, who at this point is best known for his firework incident, walk, they need to figure out what to do opposite Olivier Vernon. Owamagbe Odighizuwa didn't get much work on the outside this season, and the likes of Romeo Okwara isn't going to get it done in the playoffs, evident in New York's loss to the Packers. One intriguing player to keep in mind is Taco Charlton of Michigan, as the Giants have trended toward heavier pass- rushers for around a decade. Charlton really came on in the second half of the season, standing out against Ohio State and Florida State in some of the Wolverines' biggest games of the year. For his size, he has an interesting spin move and can burst off the line of scrimmage well. He doesn't quite look like a young Everson Griffen, but he's in that ballpark as a prospect. If a first- round pass- rusher leaves your building, you need to replace him. The position significantly tiers off after the first round, similar to the quarterback position. OK Jazz Podcast - World Music, Jazz, Soul, Funk, Blues. For the past 5 years or so I've been taking various short trips around Asia, exploring parts of the local music scene in each country (while fitting in some sight- seeing.) Here is the diary recap of my recent visit to Hanoi; a more focused portrait of the jazz & traditional music scene will be up soon.)The start of my recent, too short visit to Vietnam can be summed up with the following three quotes: 1. Better rush if you want to make it, lines are long there. But don't run in the airport, the police will surely stop you and that would take an hour at least once that happens. And lastly, . I guess it would move faster if there were more than one person behind the counter handling things. Not the friendliest lady in the world either. After a quick 'refresh' in the very nice La Siesta boutique hotel (++ points for the very nice mango & passion fruit smoothie they bring you while checking in), I headed out into the streets of the Old Quarter at about 2: 3. Street view of traffic)https: //youtu. C8. Kgr. 0Kb- n. EReading about the bike culture in Vietnam and experiencing it first hand is a different ballgame yet quickly picked up the technique of how to cross without getting smashed and started my wandering. It's often the best part of a trip, that first initial rush of diving into a neighborhood with only a basic idea of which way you're going, taking in every sight, sound and smell around you. Right away I randomly looked up to see this glorious mystery: (Radio building)I was too late to snap a pic of the very old guy leaning out the window with a noticeably grumpy face. This had to be an old radio station but from when, and what kind? I made a mental note to come back and investigate. Stupid.)The streets of the Old Quarter were enticing; I immediately fell in love with the vibe, even with the seemingly endless number of tourists. Thought not exclusively so, there was still a bit of the system of 'one street, one type of shop' going on. This way fabrics; this way home goods; that way lighting & hardware; this way wet market. First stop though of course was for some Pho; I strolled over to a street round the corner road where the hotel said were many good Pho shops. I grabbed a quick espresso at the cafe across the way from Pho 1. If you look at the bottom right of the picture you'll see a local guy in a green army uniform. When I left the cafe and walked by him he smiled at me and gave a wave, and I saw that the 'name tag' on the uniform said 'US Marines' in English.. But then, every few seconds I was already seeing things in Hanoi that could be interpreted in different ways given Vietnam's history.. Surely not a coincidence, unless there's some brand named Vichy I'm not aware of..? Shame, that would have been a sick burn by the locals towards the French. Oh well.)Feeling full and energized I walked further through the Old Quarter and made it to the top of Hoan Kiem Lake, in the heart of the city. Fantastic spot, full of energy but not overwhelming in the least. I spent an enjoyable 1. Vietnamese non- stop, then I walked round the lake and down into the French Quarter south of the lake. A different universe from the crowded bustle of the Old Quarter, my first stop in the French Quarter was Bar +8. I had been told this was a nice spot for good tunes, both live and on the speakers. With a very indoor/outdoor shape and feeling quite spacious, I was happy to grab a stool and order a Tiger beer (no 3. Hanoi!) then smiled as The Crusaders 'Street Life' came on, followed in succession by Chaka Khan then some Blue Note trumpet from the 6. Lee Morgan but of that style. A great start to the evening, and it got me feeling positive that there were some music heads here in town I could certainly hang with.(bar +8. Interlude: People ask me again and again WHY do I travel thousands of miles to go find bars that play the same music I can hear anywhere in Tokyo. I always say, it's not the music, it's the people choosing it that I go to find, to hear them talk about the local scene and tell me all about how they started their bar. Sightseeing the famous places is fun, but the best way to learn about a city, especially the music scene, is to talk to staff and musicians in the local music joints. And in doing so you learn a lot about contemporary society, way more than just blindly following a Lonely Plant Walking Map.. I drained a couple cold Tigers in bar +8. R& B' came on. The staff said they have to switch over as the night time customers want 'newer hits'. On a side street behind the landmark Hanoi Opera House it's well signposted: Very nice, with seats outside and wide open windows so you can hear the music.. I was way early for the live sets that start at 9pm, but at 8 there wasn't even any CD on. I ordered a drink anyways and took some pics, then waited for the first set. Quyen Van Minh is one of the most important figures in creating a jazz scene in Vietnam, and the owner of the club. I went up to speak with him when he arrived right before 9pm; he took my card and said to email him about meeting during the week (never got a reply back from him unfortunately.) As one of the two most important jazz figures in the country, I'm going to have to get back to interview him properly with way advance notice. The first quartet to play was solid enough, playing some mid- tempo bebop, but the effects of flying and the alcohol began to hit about 1. I paid up and walked back around the lake into the Old Quarter. Even in the light drizzle though I stopped by the lake for a few minutes to enjoy the scene. It's always so so satisfying taking that first nighttime walk back to your hotel in a new city. Got in at around 1. Day Two. Couldn't get out of bed; leisurely late breakfast meant I didn't leave the hotel until about 1. I walked west from the OQ to have a look at the Confucian Temple of Literature, site of Vietnam's first university, established almost one thousand years ago. Despite the crowds, it was interesting to see how the temple is still active; one of the attendants told me that many, if not all, students will come to pray here before and after exams. I was fascinated at the choice of books on sale at the temple gift shop: Not really sure how to process that. I wonder what a Vietnamese reader would think of Rhett and Scarlett? I left the temple after an hour and grabbed a baguette sandwich (delicious) from a small cafe, then put my map away and let myself get lost. And as is always the case, I remembered to follow the golden rule of traveling: when you see an interesting looking alleyway, take it. As. Yql. 4Ty. Qs. This was actually 1. Perhaps a bit invasive to take pics and videos right in the middle of people's lives like this, but I was in love with these back alleys with the bird cages, small shops and people just going about things. I went around and around a maze of alleys, everyone smiled at me except for one very grumpy old lady that was yelling and waving a cabbage in my face. I wandered more, took a few turns here and there, and ended up at this wonderful local intersection. Ib. P0gqy. Pbh. 4& feature=youtu. Figured out that I was still fairly near the Temple of Literature in what seemed like an extremely local neighborhood, even with the 'Asean Hotel' right there. This was such a wonderful spot I lingered for ten minutes or so just observing, before popping into another cafe for an espresso.(Interlude: The cafe culture in Hanoi is epic, monumental, exhilarating. It's something you really want to experience while you are there. I knocked a few years off the life of my kidneys & bladder with all the espresso I drank in three days but it was worth it. And I didn't even stop at these gorgeous joints.)Was time to head back to the hotel for a quick change before the evening's plans. While at a stop light I was surprised by a man sitting on a stool pointing at my shoe. He pointed and jabbered away then pulled out a small nail- file looking thing and grabbed at my shoe. This was the old 'fix a non- existing shoe problem and ask for money' scam I had heard about. I pulled away and said No Thanks, then walked away laughing. Surely there are more effective scams than this to reel in the tourists? I had plans to meet for drinks at the Metropole Hotel at 9m so after a quick nap I left the hotel again at around 5ish to go see Bar Betta and the Pho Nho Bar, two places I was told to visit for good tunes. Both were on the same street not far from the area I was exploring earlier that morning. First Bar Betta, inside a huge, beautiful old colonial house, with funky decor and some okay- ish tunes playing. Og. XWDOX1a. 8& feature=youtu. Apparently Bar Betta's popular heyday had passed, but it was a very nice vibe inside the huge house, with an open air rooftop as well for when then rain stops. The music got better after awhile but I moved next door to Bar Pho Nho to have a look. Unfortunately the rain picked up again and Bar Pho Nho was completely empty, with no music of any kind. I enjoyed a solitary beer on the balcony, exchanging FBook messages with Pho Nho's manager, who told me there is live jazz there only on Monday nights. Pleasant spot, and one I'd return to for the live music on the next trip for sure. I left Pho Nho and got immediately lost, then couldn't get a taxi in the rain so ended up walking cross town to the classic, ritzy Metropole Hotel to meet Ms. Hoang Minh Chau for a drink and chat. Chau runs the Hanoi Jazz Lovers Facebook page, and had helped me prepare for my visit in the past weeks. We met at the Bamboo bar at the Metropole, with the sound of vocalist Michele Kaye coming from the inside Le Club bar. ![]() Movies To Prove That NTR's Legacy Is Unmatched. Words aren't enough to describe the legacy that NTR managed to leave behind in a 3. Though we know it's tough to be choosy about the films where his performances stood out, here we do our best to highlight his body of work that showcases his eclectic sides as a performer. What better than his 9. So, here we go !! Pelli Chesi Chudu (1. After a decent debut with Mana Desam, NTR made his presence felt in a social satire like Pelli Chesi Chudu that went on to run for 1. The film gets to see a delightful mix of NTR's subtlety and comic touches which however weren't a regular post his newfound stardom later. Bearing an assured stamp of Vijaya Pictures and LV Prasad's storytelling repertoire, the movie was simultaneously made in Tamil and had a release in Hindi as Shaadi Ke Baad many years later. Missamma (1. 95. 5)Another pick from the Vijaya banner, Missamma arrived at the time when NTR and ANR were slowly cementing their status in the industry. ![]() However, post Malliswari, NTR needed a film that could ride on his own shoulders. This one did just that. Hilariously portraying the unemployability in the post- independence era and showcasing to what extent can ideals go for a toss if it were to ensure you a proper living, Missamma was also an adept example of how blissful romance is when it's underplayed. NTR wins his on- scren love and the heart of the spectator by an equal measure here. Maaya Bazaar (1. 95. No conversation surrounding Telugu cinema's legacy is complete if that doesn't involve a discussion about Maaya Bazaar. NTR by then made it a habit to reserve his best for portrayals of godly figures. Being a fine balance of mythology and fiction, Maaya Bazaar ensured each of the iconic characters had an equal degree of significance. A multi- starrer in the truest sense with the presence of ANR, SVR, Savithri, Chaya Devi,Gummadi and Surya Kantham in the cast, NTR played a god here and we genuinely believed him to be so. Gundamma Katha (1. We can't help but label this NTR starrer that's the fourth Vijaya film in a row and the third one with ANR in this list and we guess you know why. A regional and a celluloidal interpretation of the Shakespeare written play, The Taming of the Shrew and a Kannada film, Gundamma Katha has NTR explore his arrogant dimensions. ![]() Having a contrasting companion in the form of Savithri helps our cause to trust the equation of this on- screen couple. His encounters with Surya Kantham, Ramana Reddy and Chaya Devi are best remembered for their wonderful comic quotient and contribute to the film's tag of being the best family entertainers ever made in the history of Telugu cinema. Raktha Sambandham (1. Earlier offered to ANR who rejected it from his lap considering the fame that his pairing with Savithri had then, Raktha Sambandham reached NTR's hands and from there till date, you only see history. A tale about overtly possessive siblings who fall apart in a turbulent turn of events, the film's essential strength was the emotional strings between NTR and Savithri. The tragic ending meant that the characters ultimatley had a great shelf life. The film had Sivaji Ganesan reprising NTR's role in the Tamil version Pasa Malar which had Savithri's casting as his sister untouched. Narthanasala (1. 96. Besides the fact that, it comes from a formidable mythological storyteller like Kamalakara Kameswar Rao, Narthanasala proved that being a commercial star is no barrier for NTR to don a female avatar sans stereotypes. Playing Brihannala, the masked version of Arjuna in King Uttara's court, he was able to defy that a male protagonist needn't border on the lines of vulgarity when he is in disguise. The film, also featuring Savithri and SVR went on to win the National Award for the respective year also finding a place in CNN- IBN's list of 1. Best Indian Films Ever Made. Badi Panthulu (1. A gutsy film considering the larger- than- life acts he was conventionally popular for, during the times, NTR's Badi Panthulu wasn't any close to being an escapist's delight. Playing the role of a teacher, he had able company in the form of Anjali Devi. The movie's purpose was to highlight the indifference of off- springs during the latter ages of parents and how heart- breaking is it for the elders to tolerate it with all the emotional bondage invovled. It also showcases how blood relations needn't necessarily be a saviour during a crisis. Badi Panthulu's true- to- life scenario was its biggest strength which ensured it the following across several age- groups. Nippu Lanti Manishi (1. The 7. 0's was a phase where being over- the- top was generally considered alright, thanks to the Bollywood- bound influences. NTR equally relished this period where he reprised Amitabh's ever- famous angry young man act in Zanjeer through Nippulanti Manishi. Having had his loyalists witness many facets of the actor in him till then, this was NTR's way of reinventing himself according to the times and he didn't quite disappoint after all. S P Balasubramanyam was his new voice in pacy numbers in place of Ghantasala. Although he wasn't the fittest to be the fiery cop, he substituted it with his on- screen charisma. The movie shall be in a viewer's memory for the song Snehamera Jeevitham which still remains a hit with the playlists on Freindship Day. Daana Veera Sura Karna (1.
Marking a comeback to what basically was his forte amid his desperate attempts to fit into the changing scene, NTR literally sinked his teeth into the triple role of Krishna, Duryodhana and Karna. In spite of the film being an extended version of Sri Krishna Pandaveeyam, the venture scripted, directed and produced by the legendary actor still remains in the history books for it's miniscule shooting span of 4. Krishna in an attempt to match the senior actor's show gave the same mythological episodes his own spin in the form of Kurukshetram which had a release in the same time. As record- breaking as Daana Veera Sura Karna's outcome was, Kurukshetram couldn't survive the storm. NTR was back to home- ground and how !! Yamagola (1. 97. 7)Completely understanding the balance a storyteller needs to maintain between being humourous and utterly foolish, there came Yama Gola where NTR in a dream of his lands up in hell and overshadows Yama and Chatragupta leading to the very closure of the sin- punishing hub. ![]() Download Mp3 Songs From Random Albums: Bhadram (2014) Khamoshi - The Musical (1996). NTR had a blast with his moves, trying to match his female counterpart with every step. The film once again explored the funny bones of the actor where the wacky landing episodes of Yama and his disciple on earth were in a league of their own. Posters sourced from : aptalkies. I leap right into the line of fire, despite knowing how stupid I’m being, or I miss a crucial shot and give away my perfect hiding spot. Red- faced embarrassment and frustration follow. Some people can reliably pivot away from the mental sinkhole those feelings open up, but I am not one of them. This really hems in my ambitions. You will, for instance, never see me solo queueing to play ranked Overwatch. I’m immediately stricken by anxiety over the fact that somebody might decide I’m not pulling my weight and start yelling at me. Odds are, that won’t even happen, but I preemptively psych myself out. But if I’m soloing PUBG, which is how I usually play, every decision is crucial to my survival, and it’s mad embarrassing to miss an easy shotgun blast and then get frying- panned in the head. After that, I get kicked back to the main menu. I don’t even get to seek revenge! I’m just a footnote in some rando’s video game history, a grain of spice on their chicken dinner. Logically, of course, I know that most players are preoccupied with their own performances and don’t care much about mine. But that’s the thing about any kind of anxiety: it’s not logical. It’s just a stew of garbage emotions boiling over in your head. It takes a while to go back to feeling normal, and by then, I’m not really in the mood to play anything anymore. I find myself drawn to games that shut off those thoughts by overwhelming my senses with things for me to reflexively react to, with strategic possibilities to consider. And I’ve recently realized there’s a sort of upside to those times when the anxiety boomerang comes back around and hits me smack in the head: They are relatively safe exposure to situations that can be, for me, viscerally upsetting. It helps dull the edge on my anxiety in general, and gives me experiences I can use to remind myself that, whatever’s next—whether in games or real life—it probably won’t be as bad as I’m expecting. That said, if you ever come up against me in the final moments of a PUBG match, here’s a tip: stand still and do nothing, because I’ll probably find a way to choke on the chicken dinner. He is the biggest and tallest of the main characters and is usually portrayed as an adult. He has appeared the most, starred the most, survived the most, and has killed the most. She is generally considered a girly- girl along with her best friend Giggles. In later episodes, she seems to have OCD and feels the need to keep everything clean. His amputated hands cause him trouble that often frustrate him and his disabilities result in the death of either him or other Tree Friends. Happy Tree Friends has a rather extensive cast of characters. In each episode, at least one character is given a starring role, while others play supporting. This is a list of the other characters from Happy Tree Friends show. Pop usually causes misfortune to his son casually or negligently, ending with Cub and others injured or dead. Other times it is Cub that gets himself into danger. She is usually very nervous due to her fear of dying. She is also shown to be a coward and is highly unstable. For a long time, her gender was never made clear, though hints always leaned toward her being female. Eventually, Flaky was announced to be female considered to be a tomboy not like other female characters (they are girly). Due to his blindness, some of his actions get him and the other Tree Friends killed. He often does things blind people should not be doing, such as reading and driving. His archenemy is The Rat. He is also overweight, as is pointed out in Ipso Fatso. In most episodes, he is seen flirting with the girls, such as Petunia and Giggles, but they simply find him to be a nuisance. He has the overall appearance of a pirate, but after Season 1, he lost his five o- clock shadow. He is often seen doing water- related activities. You can tell them apart by Lifty wearing nothing and Shifty wearing a green fedora. Shifty was the first Tree Friend to be created, way before Cuddles. Even though they are brothers, they do not get along sometimes, which often results in the failure of their plans (often by them dying). They have the lowest survival rate of all the characters. He means to be entertaining, but results in others around him getting killed or getting himself killed. He normally rides a unicycle while juggling three balls. Being a mime, he does not talk, which normally results in the Tree Friend he is communicating with not understanding him, which in some cases causes many deaths. For example, in the episode Who's to Flame?, he tries to tell the fire department that the house is burning down, but since they are talking over the phone, Lumpy the firefighter can not understand him and hangs up. Later, the Mime sees more firefighters and tries to communicate with them using body motions, but they still do not understand. He is frozen in an iceblock and lives in an apartment that is mostly ice. Despite being frozen, he can perform many tasks when offscreen. He often drives around in an ice cream truck. Whenever he sees or hears anything that reminds him of war, he flips out and think he is back in the war, which results in everyone around him's death. He is the most famous and one of the most popular characters in the series. He causes more harm than good and bears some similarities to Superman, such as being allergic to kryptonut. His archenemy is Splendont. She appears to be schizophrenic due to her imagining Mr. Pickels brutally murdering everyone (unless Mr. Pickels is an actual living thing). He is similar to Flippy's dark side due to a likeliness of violently killing everyone he is near. He is also Lammy's 'imaginary friend' that only she can see in animated form. However, in Royal Flush, Giggles is able to see him, and he also managed to single- handedly kill Flaky. At first, Lammy thinks of him as nice, but Mr. Pickels then starts causing chaos, from ripping the head off Petunia's teddy bear to running Handy over with his own truck. Types of Kitchen Knives - How To Cooking Tips. Construction . It is also beneficial to be familiar with the varieties of knives that are available. The information below should be helpful in selecting and maintaining your knives. Knife Construction. Parts of a Knife. Tip. The tip of the knife is at the opposite end of the handle and is pointed, sharp and fairly thin. It is typically pointed but there are some knives with ends that are cut off straight, rounded or at a slant. The tip is used for cutting small items, cutting food into thin strips, and carving. It is also used for making incisions, such as would be used when making a slit in the side of pork chops or chicken breasts where stuffing would be added. Cutting Edge. The cutting edge is the bottom edge of the blade that runs from the heel to the tip of the blade. It is very sharp and can be straight cut or serrated. The cutting edge is used to slice, cut or chop food items both large and small, with the middle of the blade being used most often. The blade edges are available with different grinds, which have different purposes. See Blade Cutting Edges for the different grinds that are available. Spine or Back. The spine is the edge opposite the cutting edge on the blade. It is thicker than the cutting edge and adds strength to the blade. It has a smooth, blunt edge to allow the user to grip it with thumb and forefinger or to be able to apply pressure with fingers or the palm of a hand to add control to the task being performed. Heel. The heel is approximately the last two inches of the blade's cutting edge at the opposite end from the tip. It is used for cutting thick or coarse items that require extra pressure or strength. It assists in making faster more efficient cuts when the task calls for it. Bolster. A bolster is a thick piece of metal (collar or shank) that is at the end of the blade, just before the handle. It generally runs the full length from the spine of the blade down to the cutting edge. The bolster, along with the tang, gives the knife balance, which provides for better control of the knife when cutting. It also provides a place for fingers to be placed for comfort and also provides protection from the blade. The bolster is an indication that the blade was formed using the forged process rather than being stamped. Handle. The handle is the part of the knife that holds the blade. The tang of the blade extends down in the handle to attach the blade to the handle. The tang is riveted into the handle or is sometimes enclosed in a plastic or metal handle. It is important to get a good feel of the handle before purchasing a knife to be sure it fits your hand properly. If it is too big or small, it can result in inefficient use and can cause tired and aching hands. Tang. The tang is the part of the knife blade that extends into the handle. The better quality knives have a full tang that runs the entire length of the handle. It is sandwiched in between the outside layers of the handle and generally contains several holes where it is riveted to the handle for durability. The tang takes the same shape as the handle and can generally be seen on both edges. A full tang is best for adding strength and balance to the knife but there are also some good quality knives whose tang only runs part way into the handle. ![]() ![]() ![]() Molded handles contain a pointed rat tail tang, which is a long narrow shaft that is completely contained in the handle with which it forms a bond. This type of tang adds balance and strength to the knife but also provides for a little lighter weight knife. Butt. The butt end of the knife is at the opposite end of the tip. If the knife has a full tang it is where the tang ends. Sometimes the butt of the knife is used to tenderize or grind ingredients so it is important that the butt is of stable construction. Metal Rivets. Metal rivets are used to secure the tang to the handle of the knife. To prevent irritation to the hand, the rivets should be completely smooth and lie flush with the surface of the handle. In addition, this will help prevent debris and microorganisms from collecting in the spaces between the handle and the rivets. Blade Manufacturing. There are basically two methods that are used to manufacture blades. The blades are either forged or stamped. It is felt that the forging process produces a better quality blade. The two processes are explained below. Forged Knife Blades. In manufacturing a forged blade, a hot piece of steel is pressed into a blade mold and then hammered into shape. The blade goes through different processes that enhance its flexibility and hardness. The blade is machined into shape, which typically includes a bolster. The forged blade is generally thicker than a blade that has been stamped. Since 1979, Lansky’s legendary precision sharpening kits have put the perfect edge on knives across the world. The original sharpening aid, Lansky kits are the most. The thickness of the blade and the bolster of the forged blade add strength and balance to the knife. Not all forged blades have a bolster but generally a forged blade can be recognized by the presents of a bolster. Forged blades create better quality knives and are more expensive than stamped blade knives. Stamped Knife Blades. In manufacturing a stamped blade, the blade is cut out of a flat sheet of steel. The blade is then ground, tempered, polished and sharpened. Stamped blades are thinner and flatter than forged blades and will have a tendency to make the knife handle feel heavy and off balance. They are easier to sharpen than forged blades and easy to recognize because they do not have a bolster. A knife with a forged blade is thought to be better quality than a knife with a stamped blade but there are also some good quality knives with stamped blades. A stamped blade knife will generally be less expensive than a forged blade knife. Knife Blade Materials. The material a knife blade is made from will affect the durability and maintenance of the knife. Factors to consider when determining if the blade material will suit your needs are how the knife will be used, how easy it is to sharpen, how well it keeps a sharp edge, and how susceptible is it to corrosion. The information below should help in understanding the qualities of the most common blade materials available. High- Carbon Steel - Carbon Steel has been used in the making of blades for many years. Carbon steel blades are tough, can be very sharp, retain their sharp edge fairly well, and sharpen with little effort. They have a tendency to be brittle and can break under stress. Carbon steel blades discolor when they come in contact with foods that are high in acid, such as tomatoes and citrus fruit. The discoloration does not affect the quality of the knife. With proper care, discoloration and rusting of the blade can be avoided and it can be treated if it does occur. Wash and dry thoroughly after use. If the blade rusts, scour to remove rust and continue to use. A light polishing with fine grit steel wool or sandpaper can also be used to remove the stains and rust from the blade. Tip: When storing knives with carbon steel blades, lightly coat the blades with flavor free vegetable oil to help prevent discoloration and rust. High- Carbon Stainless Steel - A combination of the best attributes of carbon steel and stainless steel blades. They contain enough carbon to give them the toughness and ability to hold an edge, although not quite as well as high- carbons steel, and they contain enough chromium to make them stain and rust resistant, although they can discolor or rust under extreme conditions. High- carbon stainless steel blades are slightly harder to sharpen than high- carbon steel but they have become the most popular blade material used for high quality kitchen knives. Stainless Steel - Unlike high- carbon steel, stainless steel blades are highly resistant to discoloring or rusting, but if not cared for properly, they can stain. If over exposed to salt water, hard water, or acidic material such as, lemon juice or vinegar, it may discolor or rust. Dry thoroughly after washing to prevent discoloring and if the knife does discolor or rust, clean with a stainless steel cleaner or a light abrasive powder. Although the stainless steel blades have the ability to hold a sharp edge slightly longer, the stainless steel is so hard that it cannot be produced with as sharp an edge as high- carbon steel. When they dull, they are much harder to sharpen than the high- carbon steel. Titanium - Titanium blades are made from a mold of titanium and carbides. The carbides allow the blade to be heat treated, which produces a very strong and durable blade. When compared to steel, titanium is lighter, more wear resistant, corrosion resistant, holds its edge longer, and is fairly easy to sharpen. The titanium blade is more flexible than steel, making them a good choice for tasks such as boning and filleting. Beware that titanium coated or edged knife blades will not have the same qualities as knives that have blades made totally of titanium. The titanium coating on the cutting edge of the blade will be lost after sharpening several times. Ceramic - Ceramic blades are made of zirconium oxide and aluminum oxide. Zirconium oxide is the second hardest material available next to diamonds. It is very hard but is also brittle and can chip or break. The edge of a ceramic blade is much thinner than steel, which makes cutting through items much easier. Because the ceramic blades are brittle they must be used with caution. They should be used for slicing rather than chopping. Although they are much more brittle than steel knives, they tend to hold their edge up to 1. Once the blades have dulled, they must be sharpened by a professional with a diamond sharpener. Plastic - Plastic blades are used with the primary goal of preventing vegetables and such from becoming discolored from the blade of a knife. Plastic blades generally serrated and are not very sharp, requiring some force when cutting. Blade Cutting Edges. Ways to Sharpen a Knife. Start off on the rough grit side of the stone. Check the grit on your stone, or the packaging that came with the stone, to identify which is which. In general, whetstones and diamond stones each have different grits on either side. The rough grit side is used to grind the steel down, while the fine grit side is used to sharpen or hone the knife. The grinding process comes first, so you start on the rough grit side.
